In Greek mythology, Atlas was the primordial Titan who supported the heavens from the ranges now called the Atlas Mountains. During the war of the Titans, Atlas stormed Olympus and threatened the Gods and as punishment for this, Zeus sentenced him to a lifetime of holding up the heavens on his shoulders forever.
