In Greek mythology, Medusa, was once a beautiful woman whose ringleted hair was her crowning glory. One day, she offended Athena by comparing her own good looks to the Goddess. Athena was outraged and took her revenge by changing Medusa's ringlets into hissing serpents. Medusa became a cruel monster so frightening that no living thing could look at her without being turned into stone.
