The sphinxes were guardians of the ancient Egyptian temples and tombs. The original Sphinx was sculpted out of red granite and depicts the head of Amenophis III (also known as Amenemhet III, 1844 - 1979BC) and was was made for the King's temple in Western Thebes. Discovered in 1825, it now has an identical counterpart housed in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. A detailed cold cast bronze / resin sculpture.
